The abstract art canvas ‘Dave In Corner’ relies heavily on straight lines and clear shapes to create its human image. Lines, especially those of the wall and floor behind the image of ‘Dave’ give this abstract art acrylic painting its personality, one more cartoon-like than others in the abstract art collection. It’s abstract modern art that would be equally as at home in the pages of a graphic novel as it is as abstract art on canvas.
The posture of Dave allows for a feeling of relaxation while also creating mystery around the model, through no obvious facial expression, and is a good example of an artist showing without telling. A feeling not always achieved in abstract art in black and white. Paintings in this series were executed quickly while working with a model, often a friend of the artist. As a pose is struck, a quick sketch is drawn of it to aid the final selection process.
When a particular pose resonates with artist Harry Simmonds he will ask the model to recreate it for a longer period. Harry Simmonds acknowledges the influence of figurative artist Euan Uglow who liked to create geometrical shapes using his model's bodies and the negative space that surrounded them.
